Reading Discussion 02 – April 23, 2020
Next Steps
- Answer, what is community?
- Think about how the questions can be grouped (ex. through card sorting) to form literature review
- Group ex. social comparison, situated learning, etc.
- Think about using a conceptual model as an outcome to the thesis (outcome of the grounded theory can be a conceptual model)
Topics discussed:
- Communities of Practice
- Grounded Theory
- Virtual Communities
Community
- How we use “community” in virtual communities may be an oxymoron; people in VCs don’t know each other F2F. Therefore, it is not a real community
- Community vs. Group vs. Mob
- TO DO: Look for definition of community vs. mob; what is community?
- I suspect that UX designers have a CoP outside of the organization that remains consistent as they move across organizations
- I also suspect that UX designers in different levels of their career will have different approaches to using CoPs
Grounded Theory
- It’s ok to start GT with biases. Starting with a “blank slate” is an “artificial practice”
- GT doesn’t have to be a personal journey; it is part of how we learn naturally
- GT is informal learning
- How we think and learn naturally is valid
- You know you’ve reached a conclusion to GT when you see a convergence of patterns and you’re satisfied with the resulting explanation
- Qualitative research rose in 1920s; dominated 1st half of 20th century
- Complex human behaviour requires qualitative research
- Pragmatic approach is taken as I’m working with that I have
- Why GTM? It’s pragmatic
Value of the UX designer (Worker)
- Esoteric vs. shared knowledge; what do UX designers value? Which of these types of knowledge will lead them to success?
- Perception of competence
- How do you compare yourself with individuals? organization? location?
- What influences the perception of competence of yourself and others?
- Is it salient with the organization?
- UX design portfolios is a unique artifact / variable that can affect UX designers’ perception of competence
- How does a portfolio project what you know?
- How do you look at other portfolios to gain knowledge?
- How does one’s portfolio influence your perception of the individual?
